plot: What young Samuel was doing at the time of night on the deserted quey, nobody will ever know for sure. In fact, when Mr. Eloi, an old retired sailor, approached him, he was staring at the waters of Tagus. Tired as he was of his days, Mr. Eloi could not have thought any other way. Samuel was there to put an end to his life. And when Samuel, symbolically or not, invites him to share his last dive, Eloi, as a last resort, stops him from throwing himself in the river and, saying that Heaven can wait, takes him on a tour of the city. So the two characters go off for two long nights of roving during St. Anthony festivities...
Ce que faisait le jeune Samuel à cette heure de la nuit sur le quai désert, nul ne le saura jamais. De fait, quand Monsieur Eloi, un vieux marin retraité, l´aborda, Samuel était en train de regarder fixement les eaux du Tage. Fatigué comme il l´était par le poids des ans, Monsieur Eloi ne pouvait en déduire qu´une seule chose: Samuel était là pour mettre fin à ses jours.
Et quand Samuel, symboliquement ou non, invite Eloi à partager avec lui ce dernier plongeon, celui-ci l´empêche in extremis de se jeter dans le fleuve et, puisque le ciel peut attendre, l´emmène faire un tour dans la ville. Les deux personnages partent alors pour deux longues nuits d´errance, pendant les fêtes de la Saint Antoine...
